That is why all establishments are required to remove or reduce the concentration level of wastewater contaminants before discharging to a receiving environment. Sewage contains compounds of nitrogen and phosphorous which are nutrients essential for plant growth. Excessive level of these compounds can cause eutrophication or excessive growth of algae in a receiving body of water.
